Country sights

Today we saw an eagle perched in the field.  On closer inspection, we saw it was eating a dead sand hill crane, poor thing.  Now we are speculating how the crane died.  Did the eagle kill it?  I'm not sure that is possible.  Did a horse kick it?  (If I were a horse trying to rest, I might--they are loud and raucous creatures!)  Did lightning strike?  Not likely since we've had no storms lately.  At any rate, it is now food for the wild creatures that inhabit the Northwoods.  We have seen many eagles along the roads eating "road kill" deer and other critters, but this is a first for us.  The eagle took off as Ron tried to get a picture, and it was huge and beautiful.  I hope it comes back.

Today is Mothers Day and I could not help but reflect on the mothers I have had and known.  No matter how long Mom has been gone, I still think of her and miss her.  My wonderful mother-in-law was a sweet and godly woman.  I attribute my love of beautiful things and decorating to these two women.

Mom could take awful plastic flowers and fill a vase so that they looked real and were beautiful.  I don't think I can.  She changed them with the season.   Ron's Mom always set a lovely table even if it was just for us--I try to keep that tradition going for my nearest and dearest.  I have hardly ever served a meal without at least placemats and I really enjoy cloth napkins, though there are beautiful paper ones and I can't always resist getting some.  I hope my home is as welcoming as theirs.

We began Friday by moving a new cabinet into place in the kitchen.  Ron built it for me and it is a wonderful addition.  That began the switcheroo of the dining room and the family room.  Just for the summer, we thought it would be fun to change things up---and we did.  It took all day to replace dishes in the china cabinet and arrange the loveseat and chairs, but we did it!  Now all we have left is hang some artwork on the walls and install a light fixture.  (The dining room light rests safely in the basement.)  I love to change things around for the season so I may hang some "water/sea" pictures and put out our shells from Florida & Haiti.  Ahhh, summer!
